As an outside observer, I can see both the potential benefits and the hazards of PPS's new initiative, Pittsburgh Science and Technology. The rigorous, student-centered, inquiry driven model is clearly in keeping with the latest research. However, the demons will be in the details. How will the first 250 students become selected? Recommendation? Lottery? Will sufficient staffing be in place to build this intensive advisory program for each student? Will the four academic concentrations meet the diverse needs, talents, and interests of all learners?

As a regional neighbor in the educational community, I applaud the lofty objective and will watch this initiative as it unfolds. I believe we can all learn a great deal from both the successes and the failures of PST.
